Entrenched Authoritarian State Essay

Despite elements of democracy, with the Kaiser at the Head of the Constitution and holding such significant powers, Wilhelminian Germany was clearly structured to maintain authority and keep the power concentrated at the top. The issue is whether or not in practice the state was totally authoritarian and how far Germany was stuck in authoritarianism, or in other words; how much potential for advancement towards democracy there was. It also needs to be established what is meant by an ‘authoritarian state’ as the Kaiser’s power can be seen in the reflection of other powers; the Kaiser was the head of the army & appointed the Chancellor, therefore the authoritarianism & power of these two can be seen to reflect the authoritarianism & power of the Kaiser. Even areas where the strength of influence from Prussian elite is dominant can be seen as indicating an authoritarian state as the elite thrive in authoritarianism & bureaucrats flourish under strong monarchy. True democracy must involve ‘the people’, rather than just the bureaucrats, having a strong influence & active part in how the country is run, as only then is everyone’s interests given a fair chance to be considered. EXAMPLES However, the ‘Structuralist’ theory, heavily influenced by Marxism, argues the traditional Prussian elite were not supporting the Kaiser’s power, but seeking to fill the power vacuum left by his weak personality and the limited constitutional power of the Reichstag. This can be seen as being actively done when, instead of making an enemy of the new industrial elite, they form an alliance with them. It could be argued that this alliance actually encouraged authoritarianism as it suppressed the forces of democracy, but with the Prussian elite directing society rather than the Kaiser authoritarianism can be said to have decreased whether or not democracy decreased with it. Further evidence of the influence of the traditional elite is the success of the hugely influential Navy League with its one million members and other pressure groups. While on the surface it seems to support a more ‘history from below’ theory as it was supported by the ‘grass roots’ of political activity, it was actually heavily funded by industrialist who had allied with the elite, meaning it was possibly vulnerable to the control of the elite. Also, even by the eve of the First World War, the elite appeared to be maintaining their power because even Bethmann’s 1910 constitutional plan to alter the rich-bias 3 tier Bundesrat voting system was dropped in the face of Conservative opposition. The Conservative elite flexed their muscle again with their successful pressure on watering down the inheritance tax in the 1905 budget. However the Army Bill that was later passed included an inheritance tax, but this did not happen until 1913, so whether or not this shows the power of the elite depends on whether emphasis is put on how long it was held off for by the Conservatives or that they were not powerful enough to prevent it. The Conservative elite within the government, such as the Chairman, also tried to maintain power by conducting policies of moderate reform to weaken the socialist opposition, mainly the SPD, but the policies did not have the desired great effect. The SPD did support the 1913 Army Bill despite their beliefs supposedly being anti-navy expansion as it was Imperialist, but this does not suggest the opposition from the SPD had been lessened because the bill was actually supported by them because it involved taxing the rich. In fact, statistics show that the SPD was strengthened over the years; by 1912 it held 110 seats in the Reichstag, replacing the Centre Party as the largest party. Furthermore, this rise in number was directly in the wake of Bethmann’s ‘Imperil Insurnce Code’ demonstrating socialists couldn’t be ‘paid off’ by welfare policies. Bismarck famously described the Constitution as an ‘empty vessel whose contents are determined by those in power’ suggesting the direction in which Germany is steered is entirely dependent on who is the Kaiser, only changing with succession of Kaisers. This is very much a view belonging to the ‘personal rule’ theory on who held the power that the system was based on court flattery, favouritism & cliques due to the Kaiser’s instability. The structure of the Constitution, although supposedly democratic, demonstrates how power was concentrated at the top. It was the ‘authorities’ (the Kaiser and the Chancellor), not the Reichstag or Bundesrat, calling the shots on what was to be discussed. This, combined with the allowance of the Kaiser to dismiss the Chancellor or dissolve the Reichstag, could essentially enable the Kaiser to severely hinder the progression of any policies that displeased him. The power to dismiss the Chancellor was not an empty power; it was exercised by Wilhelm in 1909 due to Bulow’s failure to defend the Kaiser to the rest of the government after the Daily Telegraph Affair, proving the Kaiser could & would use the powers he had. However, this could not just be done on a whim, but rather Wilhelm had to wait for a sufficient reason, such as the failure of passing a budget, to be seen to be in keeping with the spirit of the Constitution. Moreover, the public clearly thought they were a democracy as they objected to the Kaiser giving the impression in the Daily Telegraph that he made all the decisions in government & were angered that he admitted to having not read the Constitution. Furthermore, that the public were allowed free critical press, evidenced in the newspaper criticisms of the Daily Telegraph incident & Zabern Affair, can be argued to be a clear indicator that Germany was not ‘entrenched’ in authoritarianism because in truly authoritarian states, such as Russia, criticism in newspapers would be censored and opposition or pressure, like that of the SPD or Nationalist groups, would be boycotted. Therefore, the public outcry to these events showed that among the public there was a spirit of democracy, not a belief in authoritarianism, suggesting Germany was not entrenched in authoritarianism, but ready and prepared to become more democratic. Any attempts of authoritarianism being increased were generally met with public opposition. However, public opinion & the freedom of it is not necessarily enough to constitute an un-authoritarian state; the limitations of the Reichstag highlighted the lack of ‘true’ democracy being the â₠¬Ëœdemocracy in the Undemocratic State’ as the Reichstag is limited in its power. The Reichstag was supposedly the source of democracy for Germany, but has since been called by Karl Liebknecht merely a ‘fig-leaf’ for absolutism, the veil covering the truth that Germany was still authoritarian. The Reichstag was made of weak, divided parties causing occasional failure to support one another & meaning no strong bloc against the authorities as the separate parties views often differed. For instance Schiederman’s call for the resignation of Bethmann was ignored & not openly supported by fellow politicians. Even when the Reichstag did agree & make own demands as a whole they were often ignored because both the Chancellor and the army were only responsible to the Kaiser, for example Bethmann did not resign after the Reichstag’s vote of no confidence following the Zabern Affair and Bulow easily silenced demand for constitutional change after the Daily Telegraph Affair with an apology. While the Reichstag was important in respect that it was needed to pass legislation, Bismarck had reduced their powers; firstly with his 1874 Septenimal Act where the Reichstag could only vote on the military budget once every seven years and then his switch to protectionism in 1879 increasing the government’s income gave financial independency from the Reichstag. On the other hand, despite this overall decrease of Reichstag powers, there was an indication their influence was on the up again by the eve of WW1 with the Reichstag allowed to vote on military budget every five years instead. This could be seen as showing gradual change and enough high demand for change to have effects like these, thus shedding light on the potential for democratic advancement & the willingness of the public for reduction in authority, meaning authoritarianism was not entrenched in German society. In conclusion, the power the Kaiser had over the Chancellor, the Constitution & the army equated to an authoritarian state, but by no means was it stuck, or ‘entrenched’, in authoritarianism. The growing assertive nature of the Reichstag combined with popularity of different pressure groups and rise of socialist movements like the SPD, shows that there was, firstly a definite willingness for change, secondly the potential for change & lastly that gradual pushes for decrease in authoritarianism were starting to be made. Germany was still an authoritarian state, but if the First World War had not happened, turning Germany upside down, power may have shifted from the Prussian elite to the Reichstag, the Reichstag’s increasing assertiveness & demands might have evolved into a stronger power and the SPD may have grown so large that the socialist movement could have transformed Germany into a socialist state & decreased the Kaiser’s power itself.

North South Airlines Essay

BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY Northern Airlines merged with Southeast Airlines to create the fourth largest U.S. carrier in January 2008. The new North–South Airline inherited both an aging fleet of Boeing 727-300 aircraft and Stephen Ruth. Stephen was a tough former Secretary of the Navy who stepped in as new president and chairman of the board. Peg Jones on the other hand is the vice president for operations and maintenance. DEFINE THE PROBLEM Stephen’s objective is to gear the company’s financial performance towards stability and continuous growth. This made him concern that the aging fleet of Boeing 727-300 aircraft’s maintenance cost may impede realization of this goal. The significant difference in the reported B727-300 maintenance costs (from ATA Form 41s) both in the airframe and engine areas between Northern Airlines and Southeast Airlines made him to probe through Peg Jones’ assistance on determining the quantitative and graphical report of the following : Correlation of the average fleet age to direct airframe maintenance costs Linear relationship between the average fleet age and direct engine maintenance costs CASE FACTS AND INFORMATION (INCLUDING LIMITATIONS & CONSTRAINTS) In addition to the aging formulas below, Peg constructed the average age of Northern and Southeast B727-300 fleets by quarter since the introduction of that aircraft to service by each airline in late 1993 and early 1994 respectively. The average utilization for Southeast and Northern were 8.3 and 8.7 hours per day respectively. In addition, available cost data including the average fleet age were calculated for each yearly period ending at the end of first quarter. Business asset depreciation depends on the cost of asset and its useful life. What is distinct about aircraft depreciation is that each component of an airplane is depreciated at different rates and depreciation methods. The North-South Airline problem for this instance may also be resolved by using depreciation methods as follows: straight line with salvage value method = Asset Cost/ Useful Life The advantage of using the straight line method involves the ease of calculating the annual depreciation amount. The disadvantage of using the straight line method is that this method does not consider the rate the asset will actually depreciate in value. Declining balance method = Remaining Asset Value x Depreciation Rate The advantage of using this method is that it accelerates the depreciation recorded early in the asset’s life and thus reduces the taxable income and the taxes owed during the early years. The advantages of using the units of production method include the ease of calculating the annual depreciation amount and that the depreciation is matched to the production quantity. The disadvantage of using the units of production method is that this method assumes the asset will depreciate evenly over its productive life. The graphs below portray both the actual data and the regression lines for airframe and engine maintenance costs for both airlines.Note that the two graphs have been drawn to the same scale to facilitate comparisons between the two airlines. Northern Airline: There seem to be modest correlations between maintenance costs and airframe age for Northern Airline. There is certainly reason to conclude, however, that airframe age is not the only important factor. Southeast Airline: The relationships between maintenance costs and airframe age for Southeast Airline are much less well defined. It is even more obvious that airframe age is not the only important factor—perhaps not even the most important factor. Overall conclusion Overall, it would seem that: 1. Northern Airline has the smallest variance in maintenance costs, indicating that the day-to-day management of maintenance is working pretty well. 2. Maintenance costs seem to be more a function of airline than of airframe age. 3. The airframe and engine maintenance costs for Southeast Airline are not only lower but more nearly similar than those for Northern Airline, but, from the graphs at least, appear to be rising more sharply with age. 4. From an overall perspective, it appears that Southeast Airline may perform more efficiently on sporadic or emergency repairs, and Northern Airline may place more emphasis on preventive maintenance. Ms. Young’s report should conclude that: 1. There is evidence to suggest that maintenance costs could be made to be a function of airframe age by implementing more effective management practices. 2. The difference between maintenance procedures of the two airlines should be investigated. 3. The data with which she is presently working do not provide conclusive results.

Bandipur - A Quaint Town of Nepal Bandipur is one of the most beautiful towns, where there is a living museum of Newari culture. A village where there is a crowning ridge and its main street lined with the traditional row houses. There is a lot of preserved Newari cultures with the cafes and lodges. It is famous for historical temples with the attractive 18th century architecture and outdoor dining which has got distinctly European feel. Bandipur is a hilltop town which is located in Tanahu District, Gandaki zone of Nepal. Bandipur is famous for the preserved, old time cultural atmosphere. It has increasingly dragged the attention of tourist. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census, it had a population of 9952 people residing in 1929 individual households. Bandipur was the trade by Newari traders from Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu valley. There are many places which can be visited in Bandipur Bazaar. Like the famous historical Temple khadga Devi which is one of the most revered temples in Bandipur. It is opened once in a year on the day of Phulpati during the festival of Dashain. Another famous place is the Bindabasini temple which is located on the main bazaar area and it is constructed in the pagoda style. On the New Year the Newari community worship this goddess and wish to be happy for the upcoming future. There are also many temples like Chandithan, Mahalaxmi temple, Narayan Temple etc. the other places like Tundikhel, surrounding areas, Paharpani Mahadev, Purano kot and Tandrang Tundrung are some of the most beautiful places makes Bandipur the most attractive one. Bandipur is also famous because we can experience our old culture which has been lost in this 21st century and to enjoy the natural beauty of Nepal and lifestyle of the ethnic newar community. It also allow us to observe how people are living in such situation where there is no such technology available. It provides the quality accommodation in hotels and resort in Bandipur. Those who are the budget travelers, home stay is available in several old newar homes that provide bed and breakfast. Bandipur is most important place for tourist to visit. ETHNIC NEWARI COMMUNITY IN BANDIPUR As, Many Newari people lives in Bandipur they have their own cultural values, norms, tradition, rules and regulations. Newari community distinct from all the other ethnic groups of Nepal. Newars are from linguistic and cultural community. In Bandipur, the Newars are primarily farmers and traders as the Bandipur valley had the fertile land which are mainly suitable for rice cultivation and also trade between India and China. The culture used in newar is called Nepal bhasa, commonly known as Newari and has its own rich literature. The people living in Bandipur are Buddhist who follow their main religion Buddhism. The highest class is obviously the priest classes that are Shakya and Bajracharya. The people living in Bandipur follows all the traditions which are included in Newari Community. In Bandipur, the people celebrates all the festival very joyfully and lovingly. The main Festival is Dashain when they worship the goddess Durga. In Newar community, all the people love to get together with their relatives and friends. They like to have the feeling of the belongings, brotherhood and friendships. Mostly the newar community people like to have alcohols like beer, the special drink named CHYANG which is made by the rice and another special drink THO. These types of drinks are served in the special occasions like get-together and other festivals like Dashain, Tihar etc. in each and every special occasion they celebrate and throw a party called BHOJ. The main type of party is Sukuli Bhoj. One of the most special festivals of Newari community is Indra Jatra which is celebrated by worshipping the living Goddess Kumari where the God Ganesh and the god Bhairav are also worshipped. It is one of the most special festivals celebrated among the Newari community. In this festival mainly, the Kumari are from the Shakya community. There are many foods which are mainly made in the special occasion like Bara, Samaya baji, Chhoela, Chatamari etc. These are mainly famous in Bandipur Bazaar where each and every famous dishes are prepared by every restaurants. Every tourist like to taste the special dishes in Bandipur. The women there prepare delicious foods which is loved by every visitors. In Bandipur there are lots of Riverside so the fishes are also special called sukeko maccha. These all are the special dishes which are really delicious and good for the health. And lots of the tourist love the food which are famous in Newari community. OBJECTIVES To know about social factor and economic environment. METHODOLOGIES: Survey Survey is the act to examine some specific purpose and to inspect or consider the reviews and survey research is the collection of data attained by asking individuals questions by direct contact with peoples, through questionnaire or through online. Conducting survey is the primary research, where first step is to collect the first hand data. The information collected may also be accessed subsequently by other parties in secondary research. Survey research is used to gather the opinions, beliefs and feelings of selected groups of individuals, often chosen for demographic sampling. These demographics include age, gender, ethnicity or income levels. Common types OD surveys include interviews and questionnaires, which comprises of multiple choice questionnaires, opinions and polls. Now-a-days questionnaires are distributed through mails surveys, group administered questionnaires or in -person drop-offs. Interviews can be hold in person or over the phone and are often a more personal for m of research than questionnaires. Survey research is used academia, government and business. Governments use research surveys to learn about their population to help better serve its citizens, while political candidates use survey research to gauge the preferences and opinions of voters. In academic, surveys are applied in fields like demographics, statistics and social research. Field Visit A field trip is an excursion which is carried out for educational and observational purpose such as museum, a factory, or a historical site. It is an expedition as by group of students or research works, to study something at first hand. It is a trip away from the classroom to permit the gathering of data at first hand. Field visit is very important for the students and for every peoples life. Students are likely have an educational experience that they never could have had in the classroom. Field trips help students interact with what they are learning. The experience goes beyond reading about a concept; students are able to see it, manipulate it or participate in it physically. Students are able to see elements with their eyes rather than reading about it and believing what they are told because its in print. Visiting a farm and milking a real cow is much more powerful than reading about milking a cow. Field trips provide entertainment for students. They often serve as a powerful motivator for students, stirring up excitement as the trip nears. Breaking away from the routine provides kids with a refresher that might make them more focused back in the classroom. Learning and fun make a great combination. Field trips take the book learning from the classroom and extend it to life. Students often question the importance of topics they study in class. While field trips take a great deal of work and energy, broadening the horizons of the students is worth it. In our country ever school should organize educational tours so that it can practically enhance the skill of students. Observation Observation is one of the process of methodologies which is most essential while preparing report. Observation is a systematic data collection approach. Researchers use all their senses to examine people in natural settings or naturally occurring situations. Observation of a field setting involves: prolonged engagement in a setting or social situation. There are six types observation which are required for every report making. These observation helps to define our objective and what we have we observed through the activities. The main types of observation are listed below: Casual and scientific observation: An observation with the casual involves observing the right thing at right place and also at the right time by a matter of chance or by luck whereas a scientific observation means the use of the tools of the measurement. Natural Observation: In this type of observation no efforts are made to bring any type of change in the behavior of the observation. It involves the behavior in the normal setting in this type of observation. Subjective and Objective observation: All the observation contains the two main components which are subject and the object. The subject refers to the observer whereas the object refers to the activity or the type of operation which is being observed. Direct and Indirect observation: In direct method of observation the persons come to know how the observer is physically present in which type of situation is he present. Here indirect observation involves studies of mechanical recording by some of other means like electronic or photographic. Controlled and Non Controlled observation: Controlled observation means the type of observation in which some of the external forces influence and such observation rarely lead to some of the improvement in the precision research results. Non controlled observation are made in the natural environment and reverse to the controlled observation. Activities Three places were selected as the sites of the field visit conducted by college management: Ghale gaun, Bandipur, Gorkha. Due to the heavy rainfall we could not visit Ghale gaun and Gorkha because of high risk of landslide. In this field visit, I was assigned to do various activities for the student welfare in Bandipur village. I got chance to expose my talent, skill and knowledge fulfilling the curriculum requirement of our course. As field visit is very important for every student life and every students should go in different places every year. In Bandipur, first day we went to silkworm industry. There we learned the process of how silk is made and what are the different stages for producing silk. We also learned about the products made out of silk which is one of the source for the economic activities in that village. Second day, we went to shree bhanu primary secondary school where we set up library for the student, painted the classroom and distributed them with the new notebooks which are required for the studies. We conducted various activities which are related with entertainment and studies. We also conducted basic hygiene classes including techniques for brushing, washing hands and personal cleanness. We were also involved in recreational activities with the student by engaging them in outdoor games like football and different ice-breaking games. In simple words, it can be said that theory without practice is empty and practice without theory is meaningless. Learning An important part of learning is writing down the findings, experiences, ideas, and other thoughts during the course in a so-called learning report. A learning report thus supports your professional learning and personal growth. Our visit to bandipur village taught us a great deal about the miserable lives of the students residing there. In this field visit I learned many things on various factor which are the social factor and the economic factor of the people living in that valley. As the social factor includes the factors which affects the lifestyle such as religion, family or wealth. These can change over time. In Bandipur the social factor has influenced individual personality, attitudes and lifestyle. When we talk about the growth of a country, we take various factors into consideration and education is one of them. Being a part of this educational visit, I was given a chance to teach and interact with the village children. In bandipur, I went to shree bhanu higher secondary school of Bandipur where I came to know that there is only one private school and many government school. There is less education facilities and most of the time children are demotivated to attend school on regular basis because of distance. The lack of basic equipment and facilities necessary in schools is also a major drawback. We visited to silk worm industries and learn the process of how silk is manufactured. The primary aim of this visit was to create a knowledgeable and empowered rural Nepal through education and as a student this helped me gain a lot of knowledge and new experiences. We even distributed new textbooks to the students there to enable them study. Infrastructure also plays a very significant role in the learning process. None of us can study in untidy surroundings. So to take a step forward towards this we painted the rural classrooms and gave them a completely new look so as to create an environment and bring in the students the enthusiasm to study. It was altogether an amazing and wonderful experience that was very knowledgeable. CONCLUSION After conducting the survey, I get to understand more about the education and knowledge about small scale industries. In Bandipur, we visited silk worm industry and other educational institution. There are different industries that runs with in purpose to accomplish certain tasks or to achieve the goals. Every industries have its own structure and each members are assigned with their roles according to their experience and qualifications. In Bandipur, we also visited shree bhanu secondary primary school which was established in 1950s. There is only one private school and different government school. The lack of equipment and education facilities is a major drawback which bring obstacles in development of bandipur. Lack of proper transportation facilities demotivate the children to go school in regular basis. There is no proper connectivity from one place to another. But with the proper implementation of government plans and local participation there can be increment of progressive changes. Hence, it was a great pleasure to do social activities at Bandipur as it was favorable place for our report.

Slag inclusion and entrapment of air during welding and formation of bubbles in pipes and valves during liquid flow all lead to pitting corrosion. (4) Inter-granular Corrosion-This is a form of corrosion which happens in alloying materials. Since alloys are a mix of different metals, the impurities tend to accumulate at the grain boundaries during heat treatment. This leads to propagation of corrosion although the amount of material corroded is small. (Oliver M. Siebert, B.et al; 1997) (5) Stress induced corrosion- This form of corrosion proceeds when materials are subjected to highly stressed environments. After a welding process, there will always be residual stresses that need to be relieved by post weld heat treatment. Failure to do so will lead to these stresses creating cracks and fissures in the welds. Because of these figures and taking into consideration the economic, political and social status of developing countries, analysts are wondering why fertility rates continue to increase in developing countries compared to that of their counter part developed countries. The reason behind this involves various aspects of the developing countries society. Total fertility rate or birth rate basically means â€Å"the number of children an average woman have assuming that she lives her full reproductive lifetime† (Centre for Cancer Education, 2007). As stated earlier, it has been observed that the fertility rate in developing countries remains to be higher than those from the developed countries because of some familial circumstances. One of the reasons behind the fact that most parents from developing countries will have many children is that they expect that some of their children will inevitably die because of the high mortality rate and they wanted to be assured of having a child left to care for. Moreover, since many developing countries are labor-intensive and needs a large work force, having a big family will enable their business to run faster and be more efficient. Another observable reason behind the high fertility rate is attributed to the cultural traditions of many developing countries. According to the World Bank, a â€Å"natural population increase† emerges when birth rate is observably higher than death rate (World Bank). However, with the changing envrionmental conditions, the mortality rate in developing countries is inevitably increasing. On the contrary, developed countries have lower death rates because they have better housing programs, accesible medical services, and nutritious food. The RCS School of the Future Initiative is primarily shaped by the fact that RCS is committed to being on the cutting edge of technology and its use in education, that middle school students will have regular access to computers in the school, and high school students will have their own take home computer to be used in all curriculum areas. Melba Patillo and the Arkansas Nine :: Racial Segregation Integration

Melba Patillo changed history by enduring one of the first high school integration in history. Without Melba's bravery and endurance we would not have black people and white people together in the same building, much less in the same schools. Melba and the other eight black students spent one gruesome year at Central High, which is located in Little Rock, Arkansas. They not only tried to socialize and study, they had to go to press conferences concerning integration and were forced to ride in a car driven by soldiers. They had to be alert every second for the entire year in order to survive. These nine kids, also known as the Arkansas Nine, have showed the world that they can beat segregation. Nineteen hundred fifty seven was a horrible time in Little Rock, Arkansas. Segregationists were opposed to the blacks having any power and threw racial words at black people. There was a large lawsuit about integration in Little Rock in 1952 that wanted to have black students attend an all white school. Unfortunately, a petition was filed opposing black kids going to an all white school. Miraculously ,May 17, 1954 was the surprising day that the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas. Their ruling stated that segregating public schools made them unequal and was illegal. Segregationists did whatever it was necessary to stop the integration in Central High School. Gov. Faubus tried to stall the integration by having two hundred witnesses testtify in opposition. Fortunately with the help of the NAACP, the court decided to make the integration work in 1957. The school year was exhausting for the Arkansas Nine. The white students had to be mean to the Arkansas Nine or be threatened by segregationists if they helped the Arkansas Nine. Melba, One of the Arkansas Nine, was a strong warrior even as a baby. She was born on Pearl Harbor Day with a scalp infection. The nurse did not tell Mother Lois how to get rid of had the infection, because she said “We do not coddle with n---------s.” If it was not for the janitor eavesdropping on the doctor telling the nurse about the cure, and telling Mother Lois, Melba would not have lived to become a warrior at the school.

Language Language is essential; language is what we use to communicate among others. It is something that joins us just as strongly as it separates us. There are many different â€Å"languages† in the world but really they are all bound by certain rules, they all have a format that they follow, all of them have, nouns, verbs, tenses, and adjectives. Language is almost like a math, the point of it is that when you speak, you try to reach a conclusion with a different person, and in math you use equations to solve problems and reach conclusions, one is numbers the other is words. Math is not easy, and learning a Language can be challenging. I came here from Mexico years ago, and I still remember how it was to not know how to communicate. I had to learn and I did; now I’m what you would call bilingual. While learning the language I was also adapting to culture, to a totally different life style than the one I was used to, learning a different language was in a way helpful in adapting to this new world because it opened doorways for me which would be closed with out it. In my younger years it seemed routine but now that I am older and reflect on my experience I can relate to those who just came here and have a â€Å"language barrier†, it’s almost like being handicapped. When I read the Tan essay, it hit close to home for me, because I knew what a language barrier feels like, I knew how people could take advantage of you because they assume that you are stupid, the thing is that society makes assumptions about people who have a language barrier, they make fun of kids who go to bilingual class, where in fact those kids are learning something that the other ones in the future can only wish that they could have learned. Does Language Determine or Limit Thought? Essay

Life is divided between things that can make you feel, emotions, and things that make you think, thoughts.1 Language is the primary way for humans to express these feelings of thought and emotion. Language can be any form of communication that has a specific meaning which is conveyed to other people.2 With this, we are able to share ideas, knowledge, and skills. But can we express these feelings without language? If so, how can we? If not, then does language fully determine thought and is it the only factor which determines it? This essay will evaluate and answer these knowledge issues to resolve the extent to which language determines or limits thought. Verbal and written communications are often considered as the main methods to express language. However, facial expressions, eye contact, sign language and many others are also forms of language, non-verbal language.3 But many different questions arise regarding these other forms of communication. Are there different limits on thought using the other forms of communication? Also, are the same factors that limit thought applied to more than one form of communication? Written language for instance, can include ambiguity, vagueness, sarcasm, metaphors and irony.4 These are all used to create an effect in conveying the message. An ambiguous sentence can have a number of different meanings, therefore different people might comprehend the sentence in a different way from others. Does age play a role in how the sentence is comprehended? Will it be understood the same way by a seven year old as by a thirty year old? These questions often occur when dealing with written language, showing that it can cause limits in thought. On the other hand, these can also apply to verbal language, if the person spoke without emotion. However, verbal language can include a variety of different tones, volume, pitch, and pauses, which all affect the way it is understood. Even silence can be considered as a language, to display anger towards someone.5 Another example showing sarcasm would be if my father told me that I was a thoughtful son. I might think that I am thoughtful or that I am not. However, do these techniques apply to all people equally? If this was said to me, I will probably understand the true meaning to the sentence, but if this was said to my seven year old sister, she would take the literal meaning of this sentence and think she is thoughtful. This proves that to different people and ages, language can limit their thought to a certain extent. It has been proven that language might limit thought to different people at different ages, but will this apply to deaf and mute people? Deaf people find it difficult to speak and mute people cannot speak at all. Without verbal language, they cannot express their thoughts, so does this mean that their thought is limited? Their form of communication, mainly sign language, is also a form of language, partly because it has the word language in its name and partly because a message can be conveyed with this method. 6 It is true that they cannot express most of their feelings without verbal language, but their thought is not fully limited as they can still use sign language. Therefore, although different forms of communication have different factors that limit thought, some of these factors apply to more than one form of communication, like sarcasm applies to verbal and written. But, even though some forms of communication have the same factors that limit thought, one form might be more effective in conveying the message than others, like how verbal can be spoken with a specific tone to convey sarcasm. There are many ways to communicate to a person and these are all a type of language. Animals do not communicate in words but in different ways. Both humans and animals use a form of communication to express their thoughts. Humans can use many forms of communication such as verbal or written but all animals use a different method. For example, dolphins use echolocation clicks to communicate to different dolphins or detect detailed information from the world around them.8 Therefore, we cannot express feelings and convey messages without language as a form of language is required to achieve this. Some think language is the main means of thought, as we think with language and communicate using it. This proves that it determines thought as the use of language requires thought and to express these thoughts we require language. The only case where this might not be true is for a sudden reaction. For example, if my father bought my younger sister a toy, she would instantly hug him. This also applies to instant reactions such as a reflex when touching a hot stove. This is because we do not think to ourselves that we should move our hand away from it but this happens instantly without the use of language. Supporting this view is the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis which states that language determines thought. But it also states that the individuals thought is determined by their native language, which changes the way the individual interprets and views the world. If so, can someone learn a new language easier if there are corresponding words in their native language? My mother proved this when teaching my daughter some English words. By telling the words in our native language Urdu first, then the corresponding word in English, my sister was able to learn the words quicker. However, some thoughts in one language cannot be expressed equally in other languages.

Action Research

The idea for my action research study came from observing a heated conversation in the teacher’s lounge. Several teachers complained about the new principal while others silently and cautiously agreed. More and more often the displeasure of her tactics with the teachers and other staff members was becoming more prominent and crystallized as the topic for a possible research. (See More on this page) I was not so sure, however, whether the new principal (let us call her Mrs. A.) was aware of her affect on people. Te topic entailed the small-scale active research format involving opinions and debates of willing participants. I knew I had to be careful not to create a situation of more of a social nature versus investigative and productive framework. I decided to call my action plan â€Å"An investigation into perceptions and opinions of successful practices in school management styles,† thus centering and going away from Mrs. A. becoming a target of negative attention. This was professional issue, and I knew that I needed some development in my knowledge within the subject, hence the need to be objective and to keep an open mind to extend the boundaries of my understanding in both directions. This was an opportunity to help both the school staff and the school administrator. The active part of the research came from the approach to actively involve all concerned (including Mrs. A.) and secure their cooperation by agreeing to answer a questionnaire (one in the beginning of the process and another at the end to raise the internal validity index) and the attitude survey. In addition, and before the questionnaire was distributed, I invited all participants to participate in an open but formal debate with the specific structure and time limits. To elicit honest perspectives and avoid the threat of bias (I was a teacher in that school), I recruited an independent industrial/organizational psychology student from the local university to conduct and supervise the debate. I knew that I needed to remove myself from any perception of power or control over the resulting data to guarantee the validity to the process. Thus, the psychology student with the help of his professor also performed all statistical analysis. Moreover, I felt that the questions on the questionnaire I designed initially were too biased toward my own opinions. I therefore, asked the same psychology student to redesign the questions for me. Once the questionnaire was ready, I took some extra time to personally meet with all participants and explain the purpose of the research. I was very careful not to give an impression that I had any private agenda in such matter. Designing the study as the technically oriented research I welcomed any duplication to increase reliability. Understanding my purpose in designing this action research plan, every participant was very cooperative. After the questionnaires were administered and collected, I realized that an independent observer might perceive a possibility to gender bias in judging responses of the questions: both the psychology student and myself were males while the rest of participants were females. Conducting this research as active helped me to develop two relevant professional purposes: the data resulting from interviews and from the questionnaire are context related as well as the subject to external and mutual influences. The second purpose is personal growth with the ability to generate new perspectives for all participants and non-participants alike. Sardo-Brown (1995) rose an interesting point about the practical benefits for practicing teachers conducting own research within their classrooms. This practice has the potential to influence the teacher’s work and to elevate the motivation and the desire to affect his or her students. The practitioner usually would begin with some questions defining the problem that is being present within the classroom life. Such problem is more relevant to the teacher who teaches that class than to the administrator(s). The solution of this problem relies on identifying the exact cause and finding a methodology to compensate for the negative affect. The teacher who becomes an active researcher has greater sense of responsibility and motivation since the resolved problem will improve visibly the quality of work being performed. Action research, then, is the tool carried out by the practitioner him or herself to address a practical problem and to influence practice affording greater responsibility. There is a sense of empowerment that becomes a source of increasing the teachers’ role in school-wide leadership and decision-making. To demonstrate the effectives of active research mode-type practices Sardo-Brown (1995) described the research processes of six classroom teachers; two of which taught at elementary level, two at the middle level, and two at the high school level. More recent account was presented my Merrill (2204) who directly posited a question, â€Å"When was the last time you sat back and contemplated how effective your teaching is?† Most certainly, this type of inquiry can be asked in any field of human endeavor, but the teaching is the most prominent since the quality of which is influenced by so many variables. This author had a particular interest in sustained technology education and hence was his interest in action research. To his credit, Merrill quoted a very descriptive dfinition of action research from the works of Stephen Corey (1953): A continual disciplined inquiry conducted to inform and improve our practice as educators. Action research asks educators to study their practice and its context, explore the research base for ideas, compare what they find to their current practice, participate in training to support needed changes, and study the effects on themselves, their students, and colleagues (Calhoun, 2002, p.18). This definition in its fullness describes the method and purposes behind such process. It names the research as an â€Å"inquiry† implying on the generally set and the most primal purpose behind any research. Then it directs our attention as its reflect-ability. Indeed, we need to study our own practice and its context, â€Å"explore the research base for ideas and compare (what was found) with (our) current practice†¦Ã¢â‚¬  But the main prerogative is to improve what we are doing even if its subjectively successful (Merrill, 2004). That main purpose was also supported by Zuber-Skerritt (1996) who provided the plan and concrete pathway to form new directions in action research. They were instrumental in that by first providing the readers in exact description and identification of different types of action research. They supported the practical definition of Calhoun by stating, â€Å"Action research is research into practice, by practitioners, for practitioners†¦Ã ¢â‚¬  Despite to such a practical view, this author’s book provided a good research foundation on how to do the action research and what exactly it is. Truman speech became the foreign policy of United States for the years to follow after 1947. It was for the first time that America’s policy took a complete turn from the isolationist policy of Monroe Doctrine to the interventionist policy of Truman Doctrine. This marked the period when United States decided to not remain aloof from the affairs of the world whereas would take
